Healing Your Business
(May 2010)
There are over 6.8 Billion People
walking this Earth (†), and each person lives every day
knowing there is real potential they might become ill. There
are over 13.6 Million firms and establishments in the U.S.
(‡); and just like People, every Business is also at
risk of becoming unhealthy or sick.
Most folks know when they’re coming down with a health
ailment, because there are symptoms that act as clear
indicators telling them something is wrong. If we honestly look
at businesses in the same fashion, most business owners and
executives also know when their organization is operating at a
less than healthy level.
Without having a clear grasp on the debilitating “health
problems” to begin with, or proper diagnoses and sound
recommendations for appropriate treatment, People and
Businesses run the risk of suffering a grave demise. Curiously,
the root causes of sickness in both people and business are
fundamentally the same and both suffer very visible symptoms,
as any one factor, or any combination of factors, can
potentially have catastrophic outcomes:
Causes:
> Inherited (Hereditary / Genetic)
> Lack of Knowledge about where the
problem actually lies
> Poor Choices resulting in less than
desirable outcomes
> Uncontrollable Outside Environmental
Circumstances &/or Influences
Indicators:
- Confusion about what’s really wrong and fear of what might happen next
- Inability to Identify & Focus On the “Real Problem(s)” and how to Find, Design & Execute On “Viable Solutions”
- Wishing “It” would just “Go Away” and that things would just “Get Back to Normal”
What’s
Normal:
Here’s a quote from Doc Holliday about “What’s Normal” – taken from the movie, Tombstone:
“There is no normal life, Wyatt – there’s just life. So get on with it!”
About “Getting On With It!”…
Symptoms:
- “I’ve cut my expenses as much as I think I can and I’m barely breaking even. Now what?”
- “I’m unclear about how to go forward and don’t know what to do or who to turn to for advice.”
- “I know I’m losing money and I don’t know where it’s going.”
- “I keep feeding personal funds into this business and cannot seem to ‘stop the bleeding.’ ”
- “My Line-of-Credit is at its limit and I’m left with no fall-back credit and no cash reserves.”
- “I don’t know whether I should do something as drastic as actually seeing a bankruptcy attorney.”
- “Chapter 11 is a huge undertaking that I know will force me into uncharted waters, and I have fears about having to ‘refit this ship while at sea’ with no proven navigation or guidance systems.”
Diagnosis:
- If any of the above symptoms ring true to you, the business is ill and it’s time to get experienced help with assessing your situation and finding viable solutions to the problems.
Taking Action:
- You must be willing to seek the assistance of “specialists” who are able to fact-find, provide financial tools that allow you to measure cash performance, and make sound recommendations and offer options on how to improve your overall operational performance.
- The assistance you need must be able to support you and your People throughout the “Healing Process” – because People ARE the Heart of the Matter
- Healing a business requires nothing short of guiding and training the organization’s People in processes and systems that focus on:
-
- Increasing Short-term Earnings Potential; and
- Sustaining Long-term Organizational Health & Growth
